The proportion of those offered a routine diabetic eye screening appointment who attend and complete a routine digital screening event where images are captured
Data is available by Sub ICB (Integrated Care Board) location.
Rationale
Early identification and treatment of diabetic eye disease could reduce sight loss. This indicator provides an opportunity to incentivise screening promotion and other local initiatives to increase uptake of diabetic eye screening. Uptake is an important measure of programme performance. A low uptake may be due to people with diabetes not wishing to be screened, not understanding the importance of being screened, forgetting the appointment or not being able to easily access the screening service.
Definition of numerator
Number of people who have attended a successful routine digital screening event within the reporting period, where images are captured such that a screening outcome can be determined
Definition of denominator
Number of people offered a routine digital screening event which was due to take place within the reporting period
Caveats
The numerator includes instances where one or both eyes are not assessable through digital photography and a screening outcome of ‘ungradable’ is assigned. In these cases a subsequent invitation to a slit lamp biomicroscopy clinic is issued, the screening event is considered ‘complete’ and is counted in the numerator of this performance measure.
Returns were reported as missing or no returns for the North East Manchester Diabetic Eye Screening Programme. As a result this eye screening programme was not included in the regional summary.
The Bath, Swindon and Wiltshire DESP had data migration issues due to the merger into the new DESP. This affected their DE1 data until Q2 2018 to 2019.
In January 2020 Staffordshire and Shropshire services merged. Due to software migration, invitation data were only available for January to March (Q4) and are not representative of a full year in April 2019 to March 2020.
