Percentage achieving 9-5 in English and maths - WMCA

Indicator Overview: This is the percentage of pupils achieving grades 9-5 in both English and Maths at Key Stage 4 (KS4), based on the number of pupils at the end of KS4.

Historical Grading Criteria:

  • 2014/15 and earlier: If both English language and literature were taken, a grade C or above in English language was required.
  • 2015/16: A grade C in either English language or literature counted; no requirement to take both.
  • 2016/17: With the reformed 9 to 1 GCSEs, a grade 5 or above in either English language or literature counted; still no requirement to take both.

COVID-19 Impact:

  • 2019/20 and 2020/21: Results include grades awarded when exams were cancelled due to COVID-19.
  • 2020/21: Pupils were assessed only on taught content. Schools had flexibility in assessment methods. Grades were determined by teachers based on available evidence and are referred to as teacher-assessed grades (TAGs).

School Coverage: Figures include all state-funded schools:

  • Local authority maintained mainstream schools
  • Academies
  • Free schools
  • City technology colleges
  • Further education colleges with provision for 14 to 16 year-olds
  • State-funded special schools
They exclude:
  • Independent schools
  • Independent special schools
  • Non-maintained special schools
  • Hospital schools
  • Pupil referral units
  • Alternative provision
  • Pupils recently arrived from overseas
